Florida's fuel port, MacDill and Hurricane Milton in Tampa

Serving Hillsborough County

Tampa is where much of Florida’s fuel comes ashore. Port Tampa Bay is the state’s largest cargo port by tonnage, and it handles more than 40% of Florida’s petroleum products. It also imports the jet fuel for the Tampa and Orlando international airports. Florida has no refineries, so that fuel arrives by ship. The port is the energy gateway for West and Central Florida, so trouble here reaches well beyond Hillsborough County.

MacDill Air Force Base sits on the Interbay Peninsula. It hosts U.S. Central Command and U.S. Special Operations Command, and its 6th Air Refueling Wing flies 24 KC-135 tankers. Work on the base runs on its own access rules, so contractors plan fuel around the gate.

When the port closes, the pumps go dry

Hurricane Milton hit in October 2024, and Port Tampa Bay closed for days. GasBuddy showed 77% of Tampa and St. Petersburg stations without fuel on October 11. On October 17, a third were still dry. For a hospital, a lift station or a job site, the only reliable fuel is the fuel already in the tank before the storm.

Mobile fueling or bulk delivery: which fits your Tampa site?

Three delivery formats. We’ll quote whichever fits your volume, site access and cost target.

Wet-Hose Fueling
Mobile fleet fueling
Overnight or day shift, fuel direct to each tank
A driver pulls into your yard after hours, fuels every truck or piece of equipment directly, logs each fill, and clears out before your crews arrive. No staff required on site.
Best for: Trucking fleets, delivery yards, rental fleets and service vehicles.
Tank Wagon Delivery
On-site tank fills
20 – 4,400 gallons per drop · same-day or scheduled
A smaller delivery truck fills your day tank, jobsite bulk tank or generator. The flexible option when volume varies or site access is tight.
Best for: Construction sites, generator refills, day tanks and smaller bulk storage.
Transport Load
Bulk transport delivery
Full transport loads to 7,500+ gallons · scheduled
Tractor-trailer delivery straight into large bulk storage. The lowest cost per gallon for high-volume buyers.
Best for: Data centers, large industrial sites, agriculture and rail yards.

Tampa fuel delivery questions, answered

What happens to Tampa's fuel supply when a hurricane closes the port?
Supply stops at the source. Port Tampa Bay brings in more than 40% of Florida's petroleum products. After Hurricane Milton in October 2024, GasBuddy showed 77% of Tampa/St. Petersburg stations without fuel on October 11. Sites that run on diesel should fill tanks before the storm and keep a tank rental or emergency delivery plan in place.
Can you deliver to contractors working at or near MacDill Air Force Base?
Talk to dispatch about the site. Off-base yards and job sites are routine. Work on the installation itself has its own access rules, which our military and government page covers.
Do you fuel fleets and equipment around the port?
Yes. Mobile fleet fueling (wet-hosing) fuels parked trucks and yard equipment on site, with DEF on the same visit. Give dispatch your gate and access requirements when you order.
Do you deliver fuel 24/7 in Tampa?
Yes. FuelGo dispatch runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, including nights, weekends and holidays. Call 800-720-4546 any time, or request a quote online and a dispatcher replies within the hour.
What fuels can you deliver in Tampa?
Clear on-road diesel (ULSD #2), red-dyed off-road diesel, gasoline, diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) and R99 renewable diesel. Most customers combine two or more on the same delivery.
Do you deliver diesel to generators in Tampa?
Yes. Dyed diesel for standby and prime generators, on a refill schedule or as an emergency run during an outage. Generator fueling →
Do you offer mobile fleet fueling in Tampa?
Yes. We wet-hose trucks and equipment in your yard, usually overnight, and log every gallon by unit. Mobile fleet fueling →
Can you deliver bulk diesel to our tanks in Tampa?
Yes. Anything from 20 gallons to a 7,500-gallon transport load, into above-ground, underground or portable tanks. Bulk delivery →
How much fuel can you deliver at once?
Tank wagon deliveries run from 20 to 4,400 gallons per drop, and full transport loads to 7,500 gallons or more for large bulk tanks. Tell us your tank size and usage and we’ll recommend the right format.
How much is diesel tax in Florida?
On-road (clear) diesel in Florida carries $0.6580 per gallon in combined federal and state taxes and fees, and off-road (dyed) diesel $0.0260 per gallon, as of October 16, 2026. Sales and local taxes are extra where they apply. Using dyed diesel on public roads is illegal. See diesel taxes by state →
Do you offer emergency fuel delivery in Tampa?
Yes. If a generator is running low or a site is about to run dry, call 800-720-4546 and a dispatcher will confirm what we can get to you and when.
Can you set up recurring scheduled deliveries?
Yes. Most customers start with a one-time delivery and move to a recurring schedule, so tanks, generators and fleets are topped up before they run low, without anyone having to call it in.
Do you rent fuel tanks?
Yes. We rent diesel and gasoline tanks from 119 to 17,000 gallons, with pumps, meters and hose fitted, and refills on a schedule. See our fuel tank rental page for sizes.
Do you have smaller trucks for tight sites?
Yes. Smaller delivery trucks reach tight urban sites, parking structures and jobsites where a full-size tanker can’t fit.
What payment options do you accept?
Credit cards, ACH and checks. Credit terms are available for qualifying commercial accounts. Ask your dispatcher for details.
