Much of Gainesville’s critical load sits on one campus. UF Health Shands has 1,149 licensed beds and a state-designated Level I trauma center. It also runs a Level IV neonatal ICU and a regional burn center. Around it, the University of Florida’s labs and residence halls need power to stay on too. When the grid drops, buildings like these run on generators, and generators run on diesel that has to arrive.
The city owns its utility. Gainesville Regional Utilities runs the Deerhaven generating station, including a woody biomass plant that came online in 2013. Local ownership means local restoration, but it doesn’t keep trees off the lines.
Hurricane Helene
Gainesville sits inland, and storms still reach it. In 2023, Hurricane Idalia knocked out power to about 14,000 GRU customers, most restored within a day. Helene in September 2024 was worse. Gusts near 60 mph toppled trees and took down two GRU transmission lines, and more than 61,000 local residents were without power at the peak. Generators that sat idle all year had to start and run.
