Artillery shells, Tobyhanna and -21°F winters in Scranton

Serving Lackawanna County

Scranton makes artillery shells. The Scranton Army Ammunition Plant fills 500,000 square feet near downtown, in buildings that started as a railroad locomotive shop in 1908. General Dynamics runs it for the Army. By September 2024 it was making 36,000 155mm shells a month, with about $400 million going into upgrades and new lines. A plant that busy keeps trucks, contractors and site equipment moving.

The Army’s other big local site is Tobyhanna Army Depot, in Monroe County. It employs about 5,000 people, the largest industrial employer in northeastern Pennsylvania, and repairs military command and control electronics.

Freight reaches Scranton on three interstates. I-380 runs about 28 miles from I-80 through Monroe County to the I-81/I-84 junction in Dunmore, on the city’s edge.

Winters here are cold

Scranton averages about 45 inches of snow a year. Its record low is -21°F, set on January 21, 1994. Untreated diesel gels well above that. Winter-blend fuel, full tanks and generators fueled before a cold snap are the plan.

Mobile fueling or bulk delivery: which fits your Scranton site?

Three delivery formats. We’ll quote whichever fits your volume, site access and cost target.

Wet-Hose Fueling
Mobile fleet fueling
Overnight or day shift, fuel direct to each tank
A driver pulls into your yard after hours, fuels every truck or piece of equipment directly, logs each fill, and clears out before your crews arrive. No staff required on site.
Best for: Trucking fleets, delivery yards, rental fleets and service vehicles.
Tank Wagon Delivery
On-site tank fills
20 – 4,400 gallons per drop · same-day or scheduled
A smaller delivery truck fills your day tank, jobsite bulk tank or generator. The flexible option when volume varies or site access is tight.
Best for: Construction sites, generator refills, day tanks and smaller bulk storage.
Transport Load
Bulk transport delivery
Full transport loads to 7,500+ gallons · scheduled
Tractor-trailer delivery straight into large bulk storage. The lowest cost per gallon for high-volume buyers.

Scranton fuel delivery questions, answered

Do you supply contractors at the Scranton ammunition plant and Tobyhanna Army Depot?
Yes. We fuel contractor fleets, equipment and site tanks with clear on-road diesel, dyed off-road diesel and DEF, from 20 to 4,400 gallons per drop. Give dispatch the gate, contact and access rules when you order. See our military and government page.
How do you keep diesel from gelling in a Scranton winter?
Order winter-blend fuel before the cold arrives and keep tanks full to limit condensation. Scranton has hit -21°F, cold enough to gel untreated diesel. We run 24/7/365 dispatch when a cold snap hits.
Do you deliver fuel 24/7 in Scranton?
Yes. FuelGo dispatch runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, including nights, weekends and holidays. Call 800-720-4546 any time, or request a quote online and a dispatcher replies within the hour.
What fuels can you deliver in Scranton?

How much fuel can you deliver at once?

How much is diesel tax in Pennsylvania?
On-road (clear) diesel in Pennsylvania carries $1.0003 per gallon in combined federal and state taxes and fees, and off-road (dyed) diesel $0.0653 per gallon, as of October 16, 2026. Sales and local taxes are extra where they apply. Using dyed diesel on public roads is illegal. See diesel taxes by state →

Do you rent fuel tanks?
Yes. We rent diesel and gasoline tanks from 119 to 17,000 gallons, with pumps, meters and hose fitted, and refills on a schedule. See our fuel tank rental page for sizes.
Do you have smaller trucks for tight sites?
