Erie builds locomotives. The plant in Lawrence Park, just east of the city, has built and repaired locomotives for more than a century, first under GE Transportation and since February 2019 under Wabtec. It builds Tier 4 freight locomotives. The plant ranks among Erie County’s largest employers, and its suppliers, contractors and truck traffic keep diesel and DEF demand steady.
Freight reaches Erie on two interstates. I-90 crosses Erie County between Ohio and New York, and I-79 ends in Erie after 183 miles from the West Virginia line, meeting I-90 at a cloverleaf south of the city. Fleets that run those corridors can fuel in their own yard instead of at the truck stop.
Christmas 2017
Lake Erie makes its own weather. On December 25, 2017, lake-effect bands dropped 34 inches of snow on Erie, an all-time one-day record for the city. Another 19 inches fell by the next morning, for 53 inches in two days, the most in Pennsylvania history. The city declared a snow emergency and asked people to stay off impassable streets.
