Smokejumpers, airtankers and fire season in Missoula
Serving Missoula County
Missoula is a wildfire town in the operational sense. The Forest Service’s Aerial Fire Depot next to the airport is home to about 80 smokejumpers. Neptune Aviation is headquartered at the same airport and flies BAe 146 airtankers that each drop 3,000 gallons of retardant. When fires start in the region, jumpers and tankers launch from here.
Fire season, 2017
In August 2017, the Lolo Peak Fire grew to tens of thousands of acres southwest of the city. Hundreds of homes near Lolo were evacuated, and officials closed Highway 12 and part of Old Highway 93. Fire camps run on generators, light towers, water tenders and support trucks, and most of it burns diesel around the clock. Fuel has to reach them on whatever roads are still open.
The rest of the year, Missoula moves freight. I-90 runs through town and US 93 heads south up the Bitterroot. The rail line through Missoula, run for decades by Montana Rail Link, went back to BNSF on January 1, 2024. Missoula Montana Airport passed one million passengers for the first time in 2024.
