Sugar beets, Global Hawks and the 1997 flood in Grand Forks

Grand Forks is sugar beet country. American Crystal Sugar runs a factory across the river in East Grand Forks, one of five in the Red River Valley. About 2,500 growers dig beets for the cooperative, with the early pre-pile harvest starting in mid-August 2026 and the full stockpile harvest on October 1. Trucks, harvesters and loaders run hard for weeks, and farm tanks drain fast.
Outside town, Grand Forks Air Force Base is home to the 319th Reconnaissance Wing, which supports the RQ-4 Global Hawk mission. Contractors, ground equipment and support fleets around the base keep diesel in steady demand.
Freight runs on I-29, which crosses US 2 in Grand Forks and continues north to the Canadian border at Pembina. NDDOT closes the stretch from Grand Forks to Canada when wind and snow make it unsafe, as it did on February 27, 2026.
April 1997
In April 1997, the Red River crested at 54.35 feet. Mayor Pat Owens ordered evacuations, and about 90% of the city’s 52,000 residents left. On April 19, a fire broke out downtown and damaged or destroyed 11 buildings across three blocks while firefighters struggled to reach it through the water. Spring flood risk is still part of every fuel plan here.
