Data centers, the I-35/I-80 Mixmaster and deep cold

Serving Polk County, Dallas County

Data centers are the Des Moines metro’s biggest new source of diesel demand. Microsoft has five data center campuses in West Des Moines, with a sixth set to start construction in 2026. It owns more than 600 acres in the city and has invested an estimated $5 billion to $6 billion. Each campus takes 8 to 10 years to build out. That means years of construction equipment on off-road diesel, then standby generators that have to stay fueled and tested.

I-35 and I-80 meet on the metro’s west and northeast sides, at the Southwest and Northeast Mixmasters. The Iowa DOT is rebuilding both. The Southwest Mixmaster dates to the 1960s and is getting new flyover ramps to I-235, and the DOT says traffic through the Northeast Mixmaster will pass its capacity by 2030. Fleets and contractors working near those interchanges should plan delivery windows around the work zones.

Caucus-day cold

On January 15, 2024, Des Moines topped out at 1°F, with wind chills around 20 below. It was the coldest Iowa caucus day on record, 15 degrees colder than the previous record. Nearly 2 feet of snow had fallen the week before. Diesel gels well above those temperatures.

Three delivery formats. We’ll quote whichever fits your volume, site access and cost target.

Wet-Hose Fueling
Mobile fleet fueling
Overnight or day shift, fuel direct to each tank
A driver pulls into your yard after hours, fuels every truck or piece of equipment directly, logs each fill, and clears out before your crews arrive. No staff required on site.
Best for: Trucking fleets, delivery yards, rental fleets and service vehicles.
Tank Wagon Delivery
On-site tank fills
20 – 4,400 gallons per drop · same-day or scheduled
A smaller delivery truck fills your day tank, jobsite bulk tank or generator. The flexible option when volume varies or site access is tight.
Best for: Construction sites, generator refills, day tanks and smaller bulk storage.

Des Moines fuel delivery questions, answered

Do you fuel data center generators and construction in the Des Moines metro?
Yes. We deliver dyed off-road diesel to equipment during construction and schedule top-offs for standby generators once a building is live, from 20 to 4,400 gallons per drop or transport loads up to 7,500 gallons. Lab fuel testing and fuel polishing keep stored diesel in spec.
When should Des Moines sites switch to winter diesel?
Before the first arctic front. On January 15, 2024, Des Moines topped out at 1°F with wind chills near 20 below. Untreated diesel gels well above that, so ask for a winter blend and keep generator tanks full.
Do you deliver fuel 24/7 in Des Moines?
Yes. FuelGo dispatch runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, including nights, weekends and holidays. Call 800-720-4546 any time, or request a quote online and a dispatcher replies within the hour.
What fuels can you deliver in Des Moines?
Clear on-road diesel (ULSD #2), red-dyed off-road diesel, gasoline, diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) and R99 renewable diesel. Most customers combine two or more on the same delivery.
Do you deliver diesel to generators in Des Moines?
Yes. Dyed diesel for standby and prime generators, on a refill schedule or as an emergency run during an outage. Generator fueling →
Do you offer mobile fleet fueling in Des Moines?

How much fuel can you deliver at once?
Tank wagon deliveries run from 20 to 4,400 gallons per drop, and full transport loads to 7,500 gallons or more for large bulk tanks. Tell us your tank size and usage and we’ll recommend the right format.
How much is diesel tax in Iowa?
On-road (clear) diesel in Iowa carries $0.5733 per gallon in combined federal and state taxes and fees, and off-road (dyed) diesel $0.0653 per gallon, as of October 16, 2026. Sales and local taxes are extra where they apply. Using dyed diesel on public roads is illegal. See diesel taxes by state →

Can you set up recurring scheduled deliveries?
Yes. Most customers start with a one-time delivery and move to a recurring schedule, so tanks, generators and fleets are topped up before they run low, without anyone having to call it in.
Do you rent fuel tanks?
Yes. We rent diesel and gasoline tanks from 119 to 17,000 gallons, with pumps, meters and hose fitted, and refills on a schedule. See our fuel tank rental page for sizes.
Do you have smaller trucks for tight sites?
Yes. Smaller delivery trucks reach tight urban sites, parking structures and jobsites where a full-size tanker can’t fit.
What payment options do you accept?
Credit cards, ACH and checks. Credit terms are available for qualifying commercial accounts. Ask your dispatcher for details.
