Oat mills, the 2008 flood and a derecho in Cedar Rapids

Serving Linn County

Cedar Rapids mills grain. The Quaker Oats plant in downtown Cedar Rapids, on the Cedar River, is the largest cereal mill in the world. Oats have been milled on the site since 1873, and about 740 people work there. Cargill and ADM both run corn processing plants in the city too. Processors like these keep trucks, rail cars and yard equipment moving, and keep generators ready to protect the process.

Flood and derecho

On June 13, 2008, the Cedar River crested at 31.12 feet. The previous record was 20 feet. Floodwater covered more than 10 square miles, about 14% of the city, and reached more than 7,700 parcels. The city has been building a permanent flood control system since, with levees, walls, gates and pump stations on both banks. It is about a third done and is expected to be finished in 2035.

On August 10, 2020, a derecho crossed Iowa and left more than 240,000 Alliant Energy customers in the state without power. Cedar Rapids took some of the worst of it. Downtown came back within two days, but power was not available to every customer in the city until August 28. Some sites ran on generators for more than two weeks.

Three delivery formats. We’ll quote whichever fits your volume, site access and cost target.

Wet-Hose Fueling
Mobile fleet fueling
Overnight or day shift, fuel direct to each tank
A driver pulls into your yard after hours, fuels every truck or piece of equipment directly, logs each fill, and clears out before your crews arrive. No staff required on site.
Best for: Trucking fleets, delivery yards, rental fleets and service vehicles.
Tank Wagon Delivery
On-site tank fills
20 – 4,400 gallons per drop · same-day or scheduled
A smaller delivery truck fills your day tank, jobsite bulk tank or generator. The flexible option when volume varies or site access is tight.
Best for: Construction sites, generator refills, day tanks and smaller bulk storage.
Transport Load
Bulk transport delivery
Full transport loads to 7,500+ gallons · scheduled
Tractor-trailer delivery straight into large bulk storage. The lowest cost per gallon for high-volume buyers.
