Just north of Utica, in Marcy, Wolfspeed opened its Mohawk Valley Fab in April 2022. It was the world’s first 200mm silicon carbide fab, and in 2024 the company said it would shift more device production there from North Carolina. A semiconductor fab can’t take an unplanned power loss, and the contractors who keep building and maintaining it run cranes, lifts and generators that burn diesel.
Downtown, Mohawk Valley Health System opened Wynn Hospital on October 29, 2023, moving all of its acute care beds and emergency services there. The new hospital has an inpatient capacity of 373 beds. A hospital that size keeps large standby generators, and those tanks need fuel that’s tested and topped off.
Thruway access and lake snow
Utica has one Thruway entrance, Exit 31, linked to downtown by I-790 and North Genesee Street. Thruway freight bound for the city comes through that one interchange.
Snow is the other constraint. Over four days in early January 2025, a lake-effect band parked over northern Oneida County and dropped up to 75 inches at Lee Center. Utica itself got about 18 inches. A band that stalls a few miles north can close the roads a delivery needs, so generator and fleet tanks should be full before the forecast turns.
