B-21 bombers, Black Hills tourism and Rapid Creek

Serving Pennington County

Ellsworth Air Force Base, outside Rapid City, has been named the first home of the B-21 Raider stealth bomber. It will host the first operational squadron and the formal training unit, and the first operational B-21 is expected in 2027. The Air Force is spending about $2 billion to get the base ready, including a $161 million low-observable restoration facility. That is years of cranes, excavators and contractor fleets on base.

Tourism is the other big driver. Mount Rushmore, southwest of the city, logged 2.43 million visits in 2023. In August, the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally fills the region: South Dakota DOT counted 537,459 vehicles entering Sturgis over the ten days of the 2025 rally. Event generators, food vendors, tour fleets and road crews all need fuel at the same time.

Rapid Creek, June 1972

On June 9 and 10, 1972, as much as 15 inches of rain fell in the eastern Black Hills. Rapid Creek peaked at more than 10 times its previous flood of record, with water rising as fast as 3.5 feet in 15 minutes. The flood killed 238 people. Flash flooding is still the hazard that can cut a site off with little warning.

Mobile fueling or bulk delivery: which fits your Rapid City site?

Three delivery formats. We’ll quote whichever fits your volume, site access and cost target.

Wet-Hose Fueling
Mobile fleet fueling
Overnight or day shift, fuel direct to each tank
A driver pulls into your yard after hours, fuels every truck or piece of equipment directly, logs each fill, and clears out before your crews arrive. No staff required on site.
Best for: Trucking fleets, delivery yards, rental fleets and service vehicles.
Tank Wagon Delivery
On-site tank fills
20 – 4,400 gallons per drop · same-day or scheduled
A smaller delivery truck fills your day tank, jobsite bulk tank or generator. The flexible option when volume varies or site access is tight.
Best for: Construction sites, generator refills, day tanks and smaller bulk storage.
Transport Load
Bulk transport delivery
Full transport loads to 7,500+ gallons · scheduled
Tractor-trailer delivery straight into large bulk storage. The lowest cost per gallon for high-volume buyers.
