Downtown Madison sits on an isthmus between Lake Mendota and Lake Monona. The state capitol, State Street and the city’s main business district are packed onto it, with the University of Wisconsin campus to the west. Three arterials cross the isthmus to connect east and west Madison: East Washington Avenue, East Johnson Street and East Gorham Street.
