The busiest inland port and the 1937 flood in Huntington

Serving Cabell County, Wayne County

Huntington sits on the busiest inland port in the country. The Port of Huntington Tri-State moved 36.8 million short tons of freight in 2019, according to Army Corps of Engineers data, more than any other U.S. inland port. Its district covers 100 miles of the Ohio River, plus stretches of the Big Sandy and Kanawha rivers. Coal is a big part of that tonnage. Barge terminals, loaders, cranes and the trucks that feed them all run on diesel.

The 1937 flood and the floodwall

On January 28, 1937, the Ohio River crested at Huntington at a record 69.45 feet, more than 19 feet above flood stage. Water stood an average of 11 feet deep in the downtown business district. After that flood, the Army Corps of Engineers built an 11-mile flood protection system: seven miles of concrete wall and about four and a half miles of earthen levee. It was finished in 1943.

The wall still protects downtown today. When the Ohio runs high, anything along the river that relies on standby power has to keep running until the water drops, and that can mean days. A full tank before the crest beats a delivery in the middle of it.

Three delivery formats. We’ll quote whichever fits your volume, site access and cost target.

Wet-Hose Fueling
Mobile fleet fueling
Overnight or day shift, fuel direct to each tank
A driver pulls into your yard after hours, fuels every truck or piece of equipment directly, logs each fill, and clears out before your crews arrive. No staff required on site.
Best for: Trucking fleets, delivery yards, rental fleets and service vehicles.
Tank Wagon Delivery
On-site tank fills
20 – 4,400 gallons per drop · same-day or scheduled
A smaller delivery truck fills your day tank, jobsite bulk tank or generator. The flexible option when volume varies or site access is tight.
Best for: Construction sites, generator refills, day tanks and smaller bulk storage.
Transport Load
Bulk transport delivery
