Chemical Valley, three interstates and the 2012 derecho

Serving Kanawha County

The Kanawha Valley around Charleston is called Chemical Valley for the plants along the valley floor and the river. The industry started here in the 1920s and peaked after World War II. During the war, the federal government built a synthetic rubber plant at Institute, just west of the city. At its peak, Union Carbide, Dow and DuPont all ran plants along this stretch of the Kanawha and Elk rivers. Plant tanks, yard equipment and backup generators are the steady fuel demand here.

Charleston sits where the Elk River meets the Kanawha and where I-64, I-77 and I-79 come together. I-64 and I-77 meet at a four-level interchange in the city, and I-79 ends at I-77 two miles north of downtown. Downriver, the Winfield main lock can pass a towboat and 11 jumbo barges, about 18,000 tons in one move. Coal and chemicals for the Charleston industrial complex ride that river.

The 2012 derecho

On June 29, 2012, a derecho crossed West Virginia, and about 688,000 homes and businesses lost power. It took more than a week to restore many of them, during a heat wave that topped 100 degrees on some days. That is the run time a generator fuel plan here should cover.

Mobile fueling or bulk delivery: which fits your Charleston site?

Three delivery formats. We’ll quote whichever fits your volume, site access and cost target.

Wet-Hose Fueling
Mobile fleet fueling
Overnight or day shift, fuel direct to each tank
A driver pulls into your yard after hours, fuels every truck or piece of equipment directly, logs each fill, and clears out before your crews arrive. No staff required on site.
Best for: Trucking fleets, delivery yards, rental fleets and service vehicles.
Tank Wagon Delivery
On-site tank fills
20 – 4,400 gallons per drop · same-day or scheduled
A smaller delivery truck fills your day tank, jobsite bulk tank or generator. The flexible option when volume varies or site access is tight.
Best for: Construction sites, generator refills, day tanks and smaller bulk storage.
Transport Load
Bulk transport delivery
Full transport loads to 7,500+ gallons · scheduled
Tractor-trailer delivery straight into large bulk storage. The lowest cost per gallon for high-volume buyers.

Charleston fuel delivery questions, answered

Do you deliver to chemical plants and industrial sites in the Kanawha Valley?
Yes. We deliver bulk diesel to plant tanks, transport loads up to 7,500 gallons, and fuel yard equipment and generators on site. Give dispatch the gate, the safety orientation rules and the fill point before the first drop.
How long should a generator tank last in a West Virginia outage?

Yes. FuelGo dispatch runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, including nights, weekends and holidays. Call 800-720-4546 any time, or request a quote online and a dispatcher replies within the hour.
