VW's only U.S. plant, the I-75/I-24 split and an EF3
Serving Hamilton County
Chattanooga builds Volkswagen’s U.S. cars. The plant is VW’s only assembly facility in the country, with more than 4,000 workers. ID.4 production ended in April 2026, and assembly of the second-generation Atlas started on September 29, 2026. A new model launch means supplier trucks, yard equipment and plant fleets running hard.
Freight through the city funnels into one junction. I-75 and I-24 meet in Hamilton County, and TDOT calls the corridor a critical connector for freight. Phase II of the interchange rebuild finished in April 2026, less than three years after it started. The ramps are now three lanes wide, and I-75 was widened toward East Brainerd Road. Fleets that waited out that work zone still need fuel where they park.
The Easter 2020 tornado
On the night of April 12, 2020, an EF3 tornado crossed from Georgia into Chattanooga. Winds peaked at 145 mph along East Brainerd Road. It stayed on the ground for 18 miles through East Brainerd and Ooltewah, destroying 254 properties. Damaged roads and downed lines can leave sites on generator power for days. Keep standby tanks full through storm season.
