Baystate, subway cars and the 2011 tornado in Springfield
Serving Hampden County
Springfield’s biggest fuel loads are institutional. Baystate Medical Center is the city’s largest employer and the third-largest in Massachusetts, and Baystate Health employs more than 10,000 people. With 780 beds, it runs the region’s only Level 1 trauma center. A hospital that size runs on standby generators when the grid fails.
Springfield also builds subway cars. CRRC began production in the city in 2018, assembling new Orange Line cars for Boston and filling contracts for other U.S. cities. The $1 billion MGM Springfield casino was part of the city’s revitalization. Plants and a casino resort both need backup power and fleet fuel.

The 2011 tornado
On June 1, 2011, an EF3 tornado with peak winds near 160 mph tore through Springfield and kept going. It tracked more than 37 miles across Hampden and Worcester counties. In Springfield alone, it destroyed more than 500 buildings. Across its path, more than 500 families were left homeless. Outage plans here need to cover summer storms as well as nor’easters.
