Rockford is a cargo town. Chicago Rockford International Airport logged more than 3.1 billion pounds of landed weight in 2024, ranking 14th among more than 100 U.S. airports. Aerospace is the other anchor. Woodward, which makes fuel pumps, valves and other components for jet engines, was founded in Rockford in 1870 and still builds here. Belvidere’s restart
East of Rockford, Stellantis idled its Belvidere Assembly Plant in early 2023 when Jeep Cherokee production ended. The company has since said it will reopen the plant by 2027 to build a new midsize Ram pickup, with a renovation of about $1.2 billion. A retooling that size brings contractor equipment, generators and light towers before the first truck rolls off the line, and supplier fleets after.
