Reefer boxes, an oil port and a record tide in Portland

Serving Cumberland County

Portland is still an oil port. It is the second-largest tonnage seaport in New England and one of the largest oil ports on the East Coast. Petroleum long dominated the harbor, but containers are the growth story. After Icelandic carrier Eimskip began calling at the International Marine Terminal, container traffic nearly tripled between 2013 and 2019. Eimskip runs a weekly service, and the terminal is Maine’s only container port with a strong reefer business. Refrigerated boxes, drayage trucks and yard equipment all need fuel close to the water.

Wind, then water

Two storms a month apart showed Portland’s risks. On December 18, 2023, wind gusts over 60 mph and heavy rain knocked out power to about 400,000 Maine customers. Crews couldn’t work in bucket trucks until the wind dropped, so restoration took days.

On January 13, 2024, high winds and heavy rain on top of an astronomical high tide pushed Portland’s tide gauge to 14.57 feet, a new record. The Maine State Pier was submerged, and water breached Commercial Street at Chandler’s Wharf. Waterfront sites lose road access first. Generator and pump tanks need to be full before the tide turns.

Mobile fueling or bulk delivery: which fits your Portland site?

Three delivery formats. We’ll quote whichever fits your volume, site access and cost target.

Wet-Hose Fueling
Mobile fleet fueling
Overnight or day shift, fuel direct to each tank
A driver pulls into your yard after hours, fuels every truck or piece of equipment directly, logs each fill, and clears out before your crews arrive. No staff required on site.
Best for: Trucking fleets, delivery yards, rental fleets and service vehicles.
Tank Wagon Delivery
On-site tank fills
20 – 4,400 gallons per drop · same-day or scheduled
A smaller delivery truck fills your day tank, jobsite bulk tank or generator. The flexible option when volume varies or site access is tight.
Best for: Construction sites, generator refills, day tanks and smaller bulk storage.
Transport Load
Bulk transport delivery
Full transport loads to 7,500+ gallons · scheduled
Tractor-trailer delivery straight into large bulk storage. The lowest cost per gallon for high-volume buyers.
Best for: Data centers, large industrial sites, agriculture and rail yards.

Portland fuel delivery questions, answered

Do you fuel reefer trailers and drayage trucks at the International Marine Terminal?
Yes. We fuel reefer units and the trucks that pull them where they park, with clear on-road diesel, dyed diesel for reefer units on their own tanks, and DEF. Drops run from 20 to 4,400 gallons.
How should waterfront sites prepare for a storm tide in Portland?
Fill generator and pump tanks before the tide, not during it. On January 13, 2024, the tide hit a record 14.57 feet, the Maine State Pier went under and water breached Commercial Street. We run 24/7/365 dispatch for outages.
Do you deliver fuel 24/7 in Portland?
Yes. FuelGo dispatch runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, including nights, weekends and holidays. Call 800-720-4546 any time, or request a quote online and a dispatcher replies within the hour.

How much is diesel tax in Maine?
On-road (clear) diesel in Maine carries $0.5670 per gallon in combined federal and state taxes and fees, and off-road (dyed) diesel $0.0670 per gallon, as of October 16, 2026. Sales and local taxes are extra where they apply. Using dyed diesel on public roads is illegal. See diesel taxes by state →

Can you set up recurring scheduled deliveries?
Yes. Most customers start with a one-time delivery and move to a recurring schedule, so tanks, generators and fleets are topped up before they run low, without anyone having to call it in.
Do you rent fuel tanks?
Yes. We rent diesel and gasoline tanks from 119 to 17,000 gallons, with pumps, meters and hose fitted, and refills on a schedule. See our fuel tank rental page for sizes.
Do you have smaller trucks for tight sites?
