The I-69 bridge, Toyota and Alcoa in Evansville

Evansville’s next big job site is the river itself. The I-69 Ohio River Crossing will link Evansville and Henderson, Kentucky, with a new four-lane, tolled bridge. Indiana has finished its $202 million approach work on the Evansville side, including three bridges that give crews access to the river. Main bridge construction is set to start in spring 2027, with the bridge planned to open in 2031. That is four years of cranes, pile rigs, barges and generators working on and beside the Ohio.

Two large industrial sites sit just outside the city. East of Evansville in Newburgh, Alcoa Warrick Operations runs the only primary aluminum smelter in Indiana and the largest operating smelter in the United States. It became Alcoa Warrick Operations in 1960. North of the city in Gibson County, Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indiana builds the Sienna and Highlander, among other models. Toyota has announced a $1.4 billion investment and 1,400 new jobs there.
