Burlington is where Vermont’s critical care sits. The University of Vermont Medical Center is the state’s only Level I trauma center, with 562 licensed beds on its Burlington campus. A hospital that serves the whole state cannot ride out an outage on a half-full generator tank.
At Burlington International Airport, the Vermont Air National Guard’s 158th Fighter Wing was the first Air Guard unit to fly the F-35A. Nearby in Essex Junction, GlobalFoundries runs what it calls the nation’s first and largest Trusted 200mm chip fab, with about 1,800 people on site. Lake Champlain and the July 2023 flood
From July 9 to 12, 2023, a slow-moving storm dropped up to nine inches of rain on parts of Vermont. Several Vermont rivers crested above their Tropical Storm Irene marks, and the Winooski, which reaches the lake just north of Burlington, crested at its highest level in nearly 100 years.
