How much fuel does a generator use?
Generator fuel consumption is driven by three variables: rated output (kW), load percentage (how hard it's actually working), and fuel type. Most commercial operations run generators at 70–80% load — this is the efficiency sweet spot and also extends engine life.
As a general rule, diesel generators consume approximately 0.06–0.08 gallons of fuel per kWh at full load. At 75% load — the standard benchmark — consumption typically falls to around 0.055–0.07 gal/kWh. Use the calculator above for your exact numbers.
Fuel consumption by load level
The load level is the single biggest factor in fuel consumption. Many operators oversize their generators and end up running them at 30–40% load — which is the least efficient operating range and accelerates engine wear.
75% load is the EPA-recommended operating range for most commercial diesel generators. Running at this level optimizes both fuel efficiency and engine longevity.
| Generator size | Typical application | 25% load | 50% load | 75% load | 100% load | Daily cost (75%, 8 hrs, $3.85/gal) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|

5 ways commercial operators cut generator fuel costs
Target 70–80% load
Generators run most efficiently at 70–80% of rated capacity. Operating below 50% causes fuel waste and "wet stacking" in diesel engines, leading to costly repairs.
Right-size your units
An oversized generator at low load burns more fuel per usable kWh than a correctly sized unit. Audit your actual peak demand before your next equipment decision.
Scheduled fuel delivery
Running out of fuel and restarting wastes 15–20 minutes of inefficient start-up fuel. A recurring delivery schedule from FuelGo keeps tanks between 25–75% at all times.
Stay on top of maintenance
Clogged air filters, worn injectors, and degraded fuel can increase consumption by 10–25%. Follow your manufacturer's service intervals and use quality fuel.
Consolidate your loads
For multi-generator sites, stagger loads to run fewer units at higher efficiency rather than many units at low load. Power management systems can automate this.
How to plan generator fuel for your project
Whether you're running generators on a construction site, at a large event, or as emergency backup for a critical facility, getting your fuel plan right upfront saves money and prevents costly downtime. Start with the calculator above to establish your baseline daily consumption, then add a 20% buffer for load spikes and inefficiencies.
For multi-week projects, scheduled fuel deliveries are more cost-effective than spot orders — FuelGo offers recurring delivery contracts with fixed pricing, which also protects you against short-term price spikes. Our fleet serves construction sites, telecom towers, data centers, and event venues nationwide with same-day emergency delivery available 24/7.
Key planning checklist: Confirm your generator's rated kW and typical operating load. Calculate daily consumption using the tool above. Identify your tank capacity and set a refill trigger at 25%. Coordinate with your fuel supplier on lead times for your location. For critical operations, always have an emergency delivery number on file — ours is 800-720-4546.
