Dyed diesel fuel—also called off-road diesel or marked diesel—is ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD) with a red dye added for tax identification. It is not taxed for highway use and is strictly limited to off road applications.
This fuel is commonly used in construction equipment, agricultural vehicles, generators, and other off-road machinery. Chemically, dyed diesel is the same as clear diesel but provides a more cost-effective option for businesses running non highway operations. Using it in highway vehicles is illegal and can result in heavy fines.
